The Hippopotamus Rises
By Andrew Martin

Publication Date: 7 November 2005

Editorial Review:
In these days of huge databases and long forcing lines, the Hippopotamus chess opening stands out, offering everyone the chance to play chess in an original and interesting way. Black plays his pawns up to the third rank (lying low in the water like the hippopotamus himself), perhaps fianchettos both Bishops and bides his time, waiting for the right moment to strike.

The Sicilian Bb5 Revealed
By Neil McDonald
Publication Date: 30 June 2005

Editorial Review:
The Sicilian Bb5 is the most popular and successful Anti-Sicilian Variation. It first came to attention when it was used by Vassily Ivanchuk to score a stunning win against Gary Kasparov at Linares in 1991. It has since become recognised as the perfect way to avoid mainline Sicilian theory without compromising White’s attacking ideals. As such it has proved a deadly weapon in the hands of Adams and Grischuk – and even Kasparov himself. In this book you will find full coverage of both 2…d6 3.Bb5+ and 2…Nc6 3.Bb5. You will be shown how to implement in your own games the ideas and attacking systems that have worked so successfully at the highest level.

Scandinavian Defence
By James Plaskett

Publication Date: 16 September 2004

Editorial Review:
The traditional form of the opening is 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qa5, with a subsequent deployment of Black's Queen's bishop at f5 or g4, and indeed the current theoretical status of this line remains good. However, in recent years many alternative schemes have been tried. There has, for example, been a marked increase in the popularity of 3…Qd6!?, in conjunction with a swift …a6 and …b5, or …Bg4, …Nc6 and …0-0-0, and sometimes even an early foray by the Black queen into the White kingside – all of which offers a radically different middlegame from the stonewalling so frequently associated with the older type of Scandinavian middlegames. Recent play also suggests that 3…Qe5, cheekily dubbed 'The Patzer Variation', might also not be so naive.

The English Attack
By Nick de Firmian and John Fedorowicz

Publication Date: 23 July 2004

Editorial Review:
Two American grandmasters provide a practical yet thorough survey of one of the hottest opening variations around today. In response to Black's ever popular Najdorf Sicilian, White plays 6 f3, which not only supports the centre e-pawn but more importantly prepares to launch a kingside pawn storm against Black's castled king, starting with g4-g5. However, Garry Kasparov, a champion of the Sicilian Defence, has shown that Black can postpone castling in favour of queenside expansion and regrouping the knight pair at b6 and d7, ready for a swift counter-punch when White castles long. But, then again, White in turn can also delay castling to keep Black guessing – in which case both kings remain in the centre! Not surprisingly tactics and sharp play abound in this most modern of chess openings, where precise knowledge of variations is vital.
